History

A group of young men was in the Christian union of the Kenya Methodist University main campus in Meru in 2017. These young men were in the leadership of the union. By God’s providence they came across the truths of the Scriptures and started to push for changes in the union (which was hugely charismatic) since they were in authority and therefore had some level of influence. This was not fruitful because they were quickly removed from the leadership and eventually from the Christian union. They decided to start a Bible Study which by God’s providence had fellow students gathering for it.

The brothers who were gathering knew that one way or another they would need be part of a church and for this then they contacted Trinity Baptist Church in Nairobi. This was also by God’s providence since they had been looking for a Biblical church in Meru town and they would unfortunately find none. One of the elders at TBC referred them to another Trinity Baptist Church in a place called Miathene here in Meru. They would then get into contact with one the elders there and would be visiting the church at least once in a month. Due to the long distance to TBC Miathene they started to feel the need to have a church planted in Meru town which is where they were located.

Again, In God’s providence TBC Nairobi had sent a pastoral intern (Eric Kahure) in June of 2018 to serve for a month in TBC Miathene and this was around the same time that the need for planting a church in Meru town was beginning to be felt. It is believed that this is when the desire to plant a church in Meru town was beginning to be formed in the heart of this brother. Certainly when the brother was being sent to TBC Miathene there were no plans to plant a church in Meru town.

Having identified the need in Meru town with the brothers who were meeting for the Bible study, TBC Nairobi started to make plans to have a church planted there. Talks with the brother eventually led to the beginning of a work in Meru Town in January of 2020 right before the historic Covid-19 pandemic. The work had to be stopped for a time due to the pandemic and it officially took off at the beginning of 2021 once the pandemic subsided. TBC Nairobi sent the brother with his wife (Eric & Martha Kahure) to kickstart the work and later on in November of 2021 TBC Nairobi sent another brother with his wife (Manases & Gloria Bor) to labor side by side with them in establishing the work. The Bible study continued for a period of 11 months from January 2021 to November 2021 and on the 12th of December 2021 Trinity Reformed Baptist Church was born, constituted with an initial number of 11 who gave their testimonies and covenanted to be members of the church.

The church voted in elders in March of 2022 (Manases Bor & Eric Kahure) who have been faithfully serving the church since its inception. Expository Preaching has taken preeminence in the worship of God’s people. Congregationalism has also been very practical in the way the church has operated. The church hopes to be salt and light in Meru and in the rest of the world by the faithfully proclaiming the Gospel and living in light of the Gospel for a powerful witness of the transforming work of this same Gospel.
